Significance of Makar Sankranti
In India, Makar Sankranti is celebrated across the country, but in different states and communities, it is given different significance, names, and rituals. For instance:
- This period of the year marks the end of the winter harvest.
- It also signifies the Sun’s northward journey.
- Some celebrate it to honour ancestry, cattle, and cultural continuity.
- In North India, Lohri, a harvest celebration, appears a night before Makar Sankranti, especially celebrated in regions of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi.
- In the North East, especially in Assam, it is celebrated as Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu that marks the end of the harvest cycle. In the Nagaland region, this is known as Tsungkamnyo, where a fair is held to showcase Naga heritage, crafts, oral traditions, and performances.
